Simple Guitar Lessons for Beginners   by James Taylor

It’s possible to take amazing guitar lessons without ever having to spend a nickel! The following four paragraphs are lessons designed to help you learn to play the guitar.

Simple Guitar Lessons Number 1: How To Hold The Guitar

In most cases, you play the guitar on your leg while sitting down. Use your dominant hand to strum the guitar strings. Therefore, the body of the guitar should go to the side of your dominant hand as well. Keep your guitar close to your body, remembering to keep the guitar nice and straight. It can happen that the guitar slides off of your leg while playing because you bend your back too much to look at the placement of your fingers on the frets. This is a normal occurrence for many guitar players. It is very important to get rid of any bad habits while starting to play the guitar. Just to reiterate, keep the guitar nice and straight.

Simple Guitar Lessons Number 2: Getting used to the chord chart

Today, we will be learning six chords and we will be focusing on the first four frets of the guitar. Frets are the spaces between the metal vertical lines of the guitar. There are also six horizontal lines on the diagram to represent each of the six guitar strings. The fingers are number 1-3, starting with the index finger.

Simple Guitar Lessons Number 3: The first three basic chords

The first chord we will be studying is the D chord. Fingers #1 and #2 are positioned on the second fret. Finger #1 is on the third string, while Finger #2 is on the first string. Finger #3 should be positioned on the second string, third fret.

The second chord we will look at is the E chord. It is an ideal chord for beginners. Finger #1 is positioned on the first fret of the third string. Both Fingers #2 and #3 will be placed on the second fret. While Finger #2 is positioned on the fifth string, Finger #3 should be placed on the fourth string. Look at the diagram below.

The A chord is another easy chord to master. We will show you the beginners method, although there are numerous ways to play this chord. Fingers #1-3 are all positioned on the second fret. Finger #1 goes to the fourth string, finger #2 goes to the third string and finger #3 should be placed on the secon string. See below for further details.

Simple Guitar Lessons Number 4: Strumming and changing chords.

Now you know three basic chords. The next step to learn to play some tunes is to learn how to strum. Strumming is a fundamental skill that must be mastered. It can be done by moving the dominant hand up and down on the strings. Try to keep your hands moving. Try to strum slowly at the beginning and continue increasing the speed when you feel more confortable. The chords should ring without buzzing and only play the strings that are also shown on the chord chart. Try to master changing chords while continuing to strum. Set the beat. Change to a different chord before starting the next beat. To master this skill more effectively, try to change chords to your favorite song with a slow beat.

These Easy Guitar Lessons were designed to be a self-help tool for you. Enjoy Playing Guitar.
